McDonald’s has told AP that the iconic mascot is keeping a low profile in light of the wave of creepy clowns pranking communities across the nation.

McDonald’s Corp. said Tuesday that it is being “thoughtful in respect to Ronald McDonald’s participation in community events” as a result of the “current climate around clown sightings in communities.” The company did not provide any other details about how often its red-haired mascot makes appearances, and how that will change.

The current climate regarding clowns is kind of hot right now. If you’ve been under a rock lately, pranksters are wearing clown gear all over the United States and scaring people. Even people in Australia and other countries are joining in on the scares.

Back in 2014, McDondald’s adjusted the classic Ronald McDonald outfit “to stay relevant”. It kind of toned down the classic clown look, which coulrophobics probably appreciated.

So McDonald’s, I’m curious – think we could just go back to the original Ronald McDonald? Perhaps a trashy dumpster clown is more approachable?
